To carry on the effort of Dr. Salvador Z. Araneta in recognizing and recognizing and rewarding poor deserving high school graduates, we are reopening an initiative to build a culture of giving among the members of the community by raising money for a scholarship fund.
The objective is to fund educational programs for youth-at-risk solely through solicitations. Lately though, a confluence of factors have combines to compel us to rely even more heavily upon financial donations. Not only are contributions to total scholarship funding minimal, but they are declining.
This slump in funding poses a problem since scholarships are our priorities in institutional planning and a centerpiece of Lasallian education. We believe that by providing scholarships to promising students who have difficulty continuing their studies for economic reasons, these scholarship programs shall contribute to the maintenance of equal opportunity in education and the same time shall foster capable human resources for the country and the society.
We have two existing types of scholarship: need based and merit-based. Need is given to students who need assistance in paying for college. Merit – based scholarship is granted based on traditional academic criteria, such as grades, test scores, as well as those given to specific categories of individuals, who demonstrate excellence in sports, services, or any other number of areas.
We can help build a local – endowment – that becomes a funding stream to support scholarship according to priorities. And endowment is a way to engage the energy of creativity of the academic community as we respond to the challenge of investing in our own university, and changing our social and financial landscape.
If we heed this call, we shall hit 2011’s goal: 20% of every La Salle school’s population shall be on full scholarship. 2011 will then be La Salle’s 100th anniversary and DLSAU’s 65th.
